The Forbidden City
The Forbidden City was once home to 24 different emperors from both the Ming and Qing dynasties. Since in ancient times emperors were considered sons of heaven, the divine castle was forbidden to commoners The castle was built to resemble the purple palace or the place they thought god lived in the construction started 1406 and ended 1420, it was built in the heart of Beijing. To represent the power gifted to the emperor by god all the structures were arranged around the north south central axis so it would seem that the forbidden city was the center of the world. For defense the forbidden city was enclosed by a 10 meter defensive wall with awe inspiring watch towers at every corner. |
